Midwife Asya Portnaya, CM:
In some ways I feel as if midwifery found me, and not the other way around. While pursuing a profession in Nutrition Sciences, I found myself drawn to Women’s Health after spending some time at a birthing center in Brooklyn. I was deeply moved by the personal and humanistic model of care that was central to midwifery. From those early experiences I’ve grown into my role as a Certified Midwife…but felt most completed by the full circle of events that allowed me to birth my own two children naturally at the Brooklyn Birthing Center under the watchful eyes of my midwives. I have deep seated respect for pregnancy and childbirth, and am in awe of the maternal effort and intention that so lovingly goes into growing a family–I believe that midwives are fundamentally linked into this process, and my goal above all is to preserve safety and high quality of care while remaining true to the woman-centered model.
After completing a BS degree in Food and Nutrition from Brooklyn College, Asya went on to pursue a Master’s Degree in Midwifery at the State University of NY at Downstate, graduating in July of 2005. Asya is certified by the American College of Nurse Midwives and licensed by the State of New York. Her career began at a private MD/CM practice, where she provided full-scope midwifery care. After two years with this busy hospital-based practice, Asya joined the team at the Brooklyn Birthing Center full time. Asya and Dr. Mark first met while she was working at the out-of-hospital birthing center for which he functions as a back-up physician, and have been collaborating professionally ever since. As Dr. Mark’s practice continues to grow, he has turned to his colleagues for support, and has recently invited Asya to join him in providing well woman gynecological care, preconception counseling, prenatal care, care during labor and delivery as well as during the post-partum period.
